This is the first book I've read by multi-published author Mary Connealy. I'm not sure why it took me so long, because I've heard great things about her books and writing for months now. And I'm not sure where to begin this review. I'm sort of conflicted.
I liked this book a lot. I loved the cover, I loved the characters and I loved the setting. But still, I only liked the book as a whole. I think because it is written in a sub-genre which I haven't really read before. Is there a genre for inspirational western comedy-suspense? That's pretty much where I'd peg this one. And of course there is a romance in there as well. But it wasn't a very deep romance between two characters that are forced to delve into the under-lying characteristics that might make them attracted to one another. It was more like Julia was the first pretty girl Rafe had ever seen, so he had to claim her before someone else might. And vice versa. They were very cute together, and their attraction was evident, perhaps just a little too physical for my taste.
Don't get me wrong--I LOVE a good kissing scene. But I prefer to wait for it. As the reader, I want to have the chance to watch the magnetism between two would-be lovers build and build until I simply cannot wait for that first kiss to happen. There simply was none of that in this charming love story. Instead there were kisses thrown about like they were candy in a parade.
As I said, I did like this book. Mary Conneally has a very distinct style of writing that is fun to read.
I borrowed this novel from my local library and I give it 4 stars.

Thanks for the review, Dawn. I read the second book in the series In Too Deep, but haven't gotten to the first one yet. I like your idea of having a western romance with comedy and suspense! Maybe you can start a new subgenre?? :-)
