A Writer’s Review of “Shattered” by Dani Pettrey

{Dawns Review}

I’ve been looking forward to reading this book ever since finishing Dani Pettrey’s contemporary romantic suspense debut novel, Submerged. Her first book was pretty good (I gave it 4 star review here), though my favorite characters in the book were not the main characters, Cole and Bailey. In my opinion, Cole’s little sister Piper McKenna, and their long-time friend, Deputy Landon Grainger stole the show. And boy, was I excited when Shattered was first advertized, and I learned that it was going to be all about them. I wasn't quite sure, because there are quite a few siblings and close friends in the McKenna clan–really, it’s anyone’s guess who’s story could be up next.

Okay, so I was already primed for this book. For so many reasons:

1.) Dani Pettrey can write.

2.) She has an engaging “writer’s voice”.

3.) She skips over writing the parts no one wants to read in the first place.

4.) Her stories are well thought out and complexly suspenseful.

It’s odd to find a book about two people who are already in love with each other... but who can’t seem to get to the point of acknowledging the facts. It’s likely not tried often because of the difficulty in getting the relationship to play out just right–and the longer-than-usual wait the reader has to see the hero and heroine end up happily together.

But Dani did it, and she did it well.

Bethany House Publishers provided me with a paperback copy of this book to review in exchange for my honest opinion, and I give Dani Pettrey’s Shattered 5 stars.

With All the Evidence Against Him, Only a Sister’s Trust Can Save Him Now

When her prodigal brother Reef’s return to Yancey, Alaska, is shattered by his arrest for murder, Piper McKenna is determined to protect him.

Deputy Landon Grainger loves the McKennas like family, but he’s also sworn to find the truth. And he knows those closest to you have the power to deceive you the most. With his sheriff pushing for a quick conviction, some unexpected leads complicate the investigation, and pursuing the truth puts Landon’s career in jeopardy.

When Piper launches her own investigation, Landon realizes he must protect her from herself–and whatever complications await as the two follow clues deep into Canada’s rugged backcountry. Not only does their long friendship seem to be turning into something more, but this dangerous case is becoming deadlier with each step.
