{My Review of Mom's Night Out}

I love a good movie, and I love when there's a book to go along with it. And I have to admit, I watched the movie first. I couldn't help it! It looked so good--and since I've recently entered the world of "motherhood", I was super excited about seeing it. This will be my life for the next twenty years??? Yes!!!! But, boy do I love my new little boy! He is worth it! 

Apart from being base on a great movie, this was a great book! Tricia Goyer has a reputation in the Christian publishing market (CBA) for writing best-selling novels of a few different genres. She did an amazing job taking the story from the screen to the page.

{My Review of Moms' Night Out and Other Things I Miss . . .} 

This was also a very good book! I'm not quite to the point of having as many of the mommy-issues as someone who has multiple, or older children--but I know from the two and a half months that I have been a mom that it's hard work! And amidst the chaos and busyness of being a mom, we need to STOP and recoup. This was a very nice devotional to go along with the novel and movie.

{My Review}

Princess Ever After was a sweet, well-written book. It was very much the same sort of situation and plot as Meg Cabot's young adult novel, The Princess Diaries, which was also made into a movie starring a teenage Anne Hathaway.

The writing is good, the characters were engaging, and I was pulled through the book quickly enough... but for some reason I was never really personally invested in what was going on in the book. 

The two books in this series have been the only two books I've read by Rachel Hauck, so I might have walked into the series with my expectations a little off. The books in The Royal Wedding Series are good... just not my cup of tea. I'm not sure if it was the fictional setting in current-day Europe/Britain or the fact that they were just too sweet. I never felt great emotion from the writing or the characters, but I have a feeling that isn't something everyone else is always looking for in a book. Sometimes readers just want to be entertained... and if that's you, this would probably be a very enjoyable book for you to read. 

Rachel Hauck’s Princess Ever After currently has a rating of 4.22 out of 5 stars (from 161 ratings) on Goodreads. I was given a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

A Writer's Review of “Rosemary Cottage" by Colleen Coble

{My Review}

Rosemary Cottage is Colleen Coble's second book in the Hope Beach Novel Series. The first book was called Tidewater Inn, and you can read my review here. 

I've read a few of her other books, and I know they are immensely popular--best-selling even. This one included. She's very good at putting together a mystery and trickling clues throughout until everything comes together in the end, there's just always something missing from them for me. But if it means anything, even after feeling this way about her books, I will still go on to read more of them. Maybe one of these days I'll simply be able to accept her style for what it is--because she is definitely a talented author.

I like the characters, I like the situations, and I like the settings. I think it's actually the pace of the story that bothers me. It's very quick, and things happen--and then BOOM, you're on to the next scene. I like a little more introspection from characters, rather than just seeing them go through things and happenings. I want to know more of their devastation and their ecstasy that comes from deep within, from where their hurts and love for each other originate. That's just my preference. When I'm not brought to those levels in a book, I often feel a bit disappointed. Because I KNOW it can be done. And perhaps it's just that I secretly wish every book that fell into my lap was as romantic and tension filled as Julie Lessman, Denise Hunter and Jody Hedlund can write them. :)

But that's just me--and why I've begun referring to myself as a book-snob more and more over the years.

And after all that, I can insist that this wasn't a bad book at all! If it were, I would have stopped reading it somewhere along the way. Rosemary Cottage kept my attention, and I did like a lot about it. I would recommend it to anyone.

A Writer's Review of “Barefoot Summer" by Denise Hunter

Denise Hunter is another author I love to love. She has the incredible ability to get inside her characters so deeply! And her plots! Oh my! I oftentimes need to sit down and prepare myself to read her books because I know my emotions will be put through the ringer by the time I’m finished with it! 

The blurb below isn’t lying when it says “the chemistry between them (Madison and Beckett) is electrifying”! This story between them is compelling. Rich. Everything I ask for in a book.

Denise Hunter books are the kind I’m quite frankly addicted to... and cannot find enough of. Sure, there are plenty of books out there—more than ever since now anyone with the internet can publish their work on Amazon. But I can’t help but notice that there just aren’t many of those that have the ability to win my affections as much as tried and true authors who have made it in the ever-changing traditional publishing world in the last ten years.

If you want to be swept off your feet and have your heart tumbled around in your chest because of the words in front of you, look up Denise Hunter’s books. Every single one of them.

A Writer's Review of “Undeniably Yours” by Becky Wade

{Dawn’s Review}

After reading (and loving) Becky Wade's first novel (My Stubborn Heart, Bethany House, 2012), I was definitely looking forward to Undeniably Yours. Her true-to-life way of bringing her characters to the page is definitely refreshing. One of my favorite things about her writing is that she doesn’t sugar-coat the real, human emotions and desires of her characters.

This book was quite different than her first. I really wasn't expecting that, and it took me a little time to re-adjust my mind and expectations. Instead of seeing the story from only the hero and heroine, the reader witnesses the story through four characters: the hero, the heroine, another young woman the heroine is helping, and the "bad guy". Personally, I thought that was a lot of character perspectives, but it didn't make me like the book any less. 

Bo Porter and Meg Cole were perfect for each other—despite the differences in life-style, how they'd been raised and that he was technically his employer, just as her father had been before her. There's just no denying the crackling fire between two people when they're soul-mates. And let me tell you, if anyone knows how to write two characters who are soul-mates and who NEED to be together, it’s Becky. She has an amazing talent and intuition for knowing just what it is her characters are looking for exactly in someone to trust their heart with… as well as with what they want out of life in general.

And, of course, there’s a perfectly timed break-up scene in Undeniably Yours—as well as the scene before it—that just rips your heart out (those are the BEST!). You might think me mean-hearted, but I do love to see characters hurt and struggle through broken hearts and damaged emotions… as long as there’s a happy ending in the end.

I definitely look forward to Becky’s future books following Bo Porter’s siblings, Ty, Jake and Dru in the coming years. I was given a paperback copy of this book in exchange for an honest review, and I give Becky Wade’s Undeniably Yours 4 stars.

A LitFuse Blog Tour for “The Noble Groom by Jody Hedlund

{Dawn’s Review}

Jody Hedlund does it every single time.

She impresses me. Yes, Dawn Crandall, the virtually un-impressible. And yet she does it... every single time.

With that said, she doesn’t have nearly enough books out! This is only her fourth published novel (with Bethany House), and in my opinion, there aren’t too many authors out there who write half so well.

Also, before I start in on what I loved SO MUCH about the inside of this book, I have to add that A Noble Groom has THE BEST COVER EVER. I don’t often like covers with the hero of the book pictured, especially without the heroine involved at all! But this one went so well with the blurb about the book. Everything about it was perfect: the farm, the wind, the clouds, the suit, the cravat, the colors, the look on his face... everything about it matched everything inside the book to perfection.

I really don’t know how exactly Jody makes reading about two mismatched people working on a farm in the middle of nowhere Michigan in 1880/1881—speaking German (hypothetically) to one another no less—so enthralling. But like I said, she does it every time, no matter what she’s writing about.

You know, on second thought, maybe I do know what it is. It’s her characters. Their emotions are so true, their thoughts so amazingly accurate. The situations they find themselves in... so complexly and perfectly orchestrated.

Both Annalisa Werner and Carl von Reichart have so much to learn throughout the pages of this book; about themselves and about each other, as well as about life in general. Although they’re both German immigrants from an area called Saxony, they are from extreme opposite worlds. Annalisa is the widow of a mean-hearted peasant farmer who’s family had relocated to America six years before because of the severe work conditions in Saxony... and Carl, the wrongly-accused fugitive, who happens to (secretly) be the son of the over-bearing Baron who caused the death of Annalisa’s older brother which resulted in her entire family immigrating to America in the first place.

Talk about complex! Although I did begin reading this book the first moment I had it in my grasp (and after, literally, stalking my mailman everyday waiting for it to arrive!), I did not end up reading it quickly. Partly because I simply didn't want it to end and partly because there were so many points in the book that I just had to stop reading so I could digest what all was (or at times, what wasn’t!) going on within and between these two characters. There were also all of the times when I felt that all was lost, and I had no idea how Carl and Annalisa were ever going to end up together by the end of the book....

Sigh.

Then I finally read the last twenty percent as quickly as possible because I couldn’t stand not to any longer.

And then I sighed again, and again, and again. (haha, that’s especially for Jody and anyone else who might have read the book already).

Now every time I see the cover of the book pictured anywhere, I simply sigh and say, “Oh, yes... that book. That wonderful book.”
