The Story Behind the Print

I own this original print from the 1880's and thought I'd share. I get tons of inspiration from things like this... I scour the internet looking for interesting prints, paintings or photos that look like what's going on in my mind as I write a book. This one hasn't made it into a book yet, but I have a suspicion that it will lend itself to a scene in my third book, which is about Estella Everstone. It looks pretty perfect for a scene near the end.

What do you see happening in this picture? Personally, I think the print has everything needed to write an entire novel. But then again, I have a VERY over-active imagination. :D

Oh wow! Yes, I agree with you. This picture could tell a whole story!!

Whatever that man is reading, I'd say that the lady sitting in the chair had brought it to the two others. From the handkerchief clutched in her hands and her wide-eyed expression, I'd say it isn't good news.

That's funny, Katie. You saw a totally different scene than I did! I imagined that the couple had just realized that they were in love with one another when her aunt came to join them, oblivious to what was going on. Hero is trying to act interested in what Aunt is saying while Heroine looks as though she can not wait until she and Hero were able to have a free moment together again...

The lady in the chair is Sally. Her sister, Louisa, has been in Italy to recover her health since the death of their father. Avery, the young man holding the letter, is madly in love with Marianne, the young lady standing, but a marriage between him and Louisa has been understood for years. Marianne was hoping Louisa would die in Italy, but since that hasn't happened, she has plans for that letter opener clutched in her hand!

Oh...and the dog is the only one in this whole picture who understands that Marianne is a psycho. I'm not sure the dog realizes Sally and Avery are the ones who truly belong together, but he CLEARLY does not like Marianne.

I'm with you. Pictures are amazing story generators!! :)

Such a great picture you have here. I especially like the expressions on their faces. :)

You can almost feel the mood in the room...
