A Writer's Review of “Rosemary Cottage" by Colleen Coble

{My Review}

Rosemary Cottage is Colleen Coble's second book in the Hope Beach Novel Series. The first book was called Tidewater Inn, and you can read my review here.

I've read a few of her other books, and I know they are immensely popular--best-selling even. This one included. She's very good at putting together a mystery and trickling clues throughout until everything comes together in the end, there's just always something missing from them for me. But if it means anything, even after feeling this way about her books, I will still go on to read more of them. Maybe one of these days I'll simply be able to accept her style for what it is--because she is definitely a talented author.

I like the characters, I like the situations, and I like the settings. I think it's actually the pace of the story that bothers me. It's very quick, and things happen--and then BOOM, you're on to the next scene. I like a little more introspection from characters, rather than just seeing them go through things and happenings. I want to know more of their devastation and their ecstasy that comes from deep within, from where their hurts and love for each other originate. That's just my preference. When I'm not brought to those levels in a book, I often feel a bit disappointed. Because I KNOW it can be done. And perhaps it's just that I secretly wish every book that fell into my lap was as romantic and tension filled as Julie Lessman, Denise Hunter and Jody Hedlund can write them. :)

But that's just me--and why I've begun referring to myself as a book-snob more and more over the years.

And after all that, I can insist that this wasn't a bad book at all! If it were, I would have stopped reading it somewhere along the way. Rosemary Cottage kept my attention, and I did like a lot about it. I would recommend it to anyone.

I received a free paperback copy of Colleen Coble's Rosemary Cottage from the publisher in return for this honest review.

{About the Book}

The cottage by the sea offers Amy a refuge to mourn her brother’s death and perhaps even discover a new love. But what if Ben’s death was no accident?

Rosemary Cottage on the Outer Banks of North Carolina has been in Amy Lang’s family for generations and offers her a haven within its peaceful walls. There she hopes to discover what really happened to her brother, Ben, even as she tries to come to grips with his death in the ocean months before.

She hopes the Coast Guard team will help her find closure, but they are quick to dismiss her concerns of foul play. Everyone in Hope Beach regards the suspicious e-mail she received as a vicious prank. When it seems discovering what happened to Ben will take longer than she expected, Amy moves her midwifery practice to Hope Beach.

Coast Guard officer Curtis Ireland may hold the key to many of her questions, but he also hides a secret that will change her world forever. And her own secrets could tear apart the fragile love developing between them. Will Amy have the courage to put down her mask and let Curtis love her for who she is? And can they both weather the danger that threatens to destroy the most precious thing in their lives?

A Writer's Review of “Tidewater Inn" by Colleen Coble

{Dawn's Review}

For only being the third book I've ever read in this genre (I usually read historicals), I liked Colleen Coble's Tidewater Inn better than the other two books put together. I loved the island setting of Hope Beach off the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and I loved the main characters. Coast Guard Lieutenant, Alec Bourne and Libby Holladay, an outsider to the island who has inherited a beachfront property called The Tidewater Inn from her now-deceased, estranged father both pulled me from page to page. I wanted (so much!) to know what was going to happen between them when the details of the mystery came to light. And there were so many other characters that I enjoyed getting to know and hope to see and get to know better in the next books in this series.

I have to admit, I was thrown for a loop concerning the mystery at the end. In a good way. Being a writer, I was constantly thinking up way the plot might go--and not a single one of my own ideas happened to be what the author came up with. So yeah, I was pleased.

The ending was perfect, with it's surprises, and it's saves, and it's kisses. I look forward to reading more about Alec and Libby and their friends on the island in Rosemary Cottage, the next book in Colleen Coble's new Hope Beach Series. I was given a paperback copy of this book by the publisher in order to read it and give my honest review for this LitFuse Publicity Blog Tour. I give Tidewater Inn 4 stars.

{More about Tidewater Inn}

Welcome to Hope Beach. A place of intoxicating beauty . . . where trouble hits with the force of a hurricane. Inheriting a beautiful old hotel on the Outer Banks could be a dream come true for Libby. The inn cries out for her restorer’s talent and love of history. She’s delighted to learn of the family she never knew she had. And the handsome Coast Guard lieutenant she’s met there on the island could definitely be the man of her dreams. But Libby soon realizes that the only way she can afford the upkeep on the inn is to sell it to developers who are stalking the island. The father who willed her the inn has died before she could meet him, and her new-found brother and sister are convinced she’s there to steal their birthright. Worst of all, her best friend and business partner has been kidnapped before her eyes, and Libby’s under suspicion for the crime. Libby’s dream come true is becoming a nightmare. Her only option is to find her friend and prove her innocence, or lose everything on the shores of Hope Island.

A Writer's Review of “The Lightkeeper's Bride" by Colleen Coble

I have been reading all sorts of new authors and sub-genres lately... mostly for the sake of this blog. I used to simply put a “hold request” on books of my favorite authors– and not have a new book to read for a very long time while I waited. I have been burned a few different times by new authors, and I think it turned me off from trying them out very often. Well, this week I read my first book by Colleen Coble, The Lightkeeper's Bride, a new author and new sub-genre for me. :D

I wasn't sure what I was going to be walking into beginning this book without reading Book One in the Mercy Falls Series (The Lightkeeper's Daughter)– and that may have contributed to how quickly I was lost in a rush of  fast paced information-overloaded scenes. Not that this was bad. Having never read many books involving the aspect of suspense before, I was unprepared for how quickly the clues started piling up! But what I found by the end of the book was that I have a new favorite author and sub-genre of books to read!

Katie Russell and Will Jesperson were both very likable main characters who seemed absolutely perfect for each other from the moment they met. The author did a very good job of making it clear how well they knew each other and that being known so well by another was so important to them. I also loved the adventure of searching for a hidden pirated ship along the rocky coast of Northern California. There were things I would have liked to see more or less of– but as a whole I enjoyed this book because of the characters, the general plot and writing style of the author.

I borrowed The Lightkeeper's Bride from my local Allen County Library and I give it 4 STARS.
